Skullmetal.com is the brainchild of Rattlehead and Megahertz formally of pirate metal radio station WMTL in Palm Beach County, Florida. WMTL was an FM radio station that existed off and on from 1987 to 2007 just under the radar of the FCC (FUCK YOU FCC, you CANT TOUCH ME NOW!!) and at it’s peak operated with a 1000 watt transmitter and a 10 story antenna tower,. on a good day reaching a radius of 40 to 60 mile coverage (20 to 30 miles in each direction).
WMTL operated on the different FM radio frequencies of 88.5, 88.7, 91.5 and 91.7 and had a huge metal fan-based listenership over the two decades that the station pounded the PISS out of the Palm Beaches.
Although Megahertz (CAPTAIN Megahertz as he was known in the early years) is not a huge fan of metal,. he was a supporter and MAJOR CONTRIBUTER of the South Florida pirate radio scene in those days and realized the need of the format of metal,.. music not played by the commercial stations in the area,.. to be played on the FM airwaves.
The formula was set after Rattlehead called into Megahertz’s pirate FM radio station request line when he heard Metallica being played back in late 1986 and became allies with him,. Megahertz then set Rattlehead up with his own pirate radio station which was named WMTL and quickly acquired more listeners than any pirate of the times,. with Megahertz supporting the station with technical knowledge over the next 20 years.
Through thick and thin and many trial and error times WMTL FM made it through two decades of decadence supporting national and local bands of the metal scene.
Back in 1987, Rattlehead sent Megahertz up to Kentucky (his birth state) to help set up FM pirate station WKIL for his life long best friend TC, who is now doing weeknight shows on SKULLMETAL RADIO. More on WKIL on the DJ info page.
Esoteric Death was a listener, fan and request line regular of South Florida's WMTL. Then in the year 2000 he won OZZFEST tickets from a WMTL contest give-away and met Rattlehead face to face. They soon became great friends and Rattlehead invited him aboard to do shows on WMTL starting in late 2000. He is now doing the morning shows here at SKULLMETAL RADIO.
Now,. going for a WORLD WIDE DOMINANCE,.. The pirate FM stations WMTL and WKIL have morphed into SKULLMETAL RADIO and the method of broadcast has gone from FM airwaves to internet streaming,.. but the format has remained the same. A mixture of ‘over the edge’ commentary, outrageous comedy and in your face nut-crunching hardcore metal music!
